A team of researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Kristina Vukusic, Josefine Ekholm and orthopaedic surgeon Sebastian Concaro, recently performed an osteochondral study to test whether chondrocytes differentiated from iPS cells can repair cartilage. Kristina kindly provided a short description and photographs of their process.
- Osteochondral plugs are cut out of human cartilage harvested from surgical waste at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
- A wound is created in each plug
- Cells are injected into the wound: iCHO (IPS cells differentiated into chondrocytes) and control cells (human chondrocytes from patients)
- The wound and cells are sealed with fibrin glue to keep the cells in place.
- Plugs incubated
